The evaluation of an informative speech №1

Hello! This week we are supposed to start giving our informative speeches on different topics. The first topic is “Stage fright”. My group mate Polina Andriyanova decided to give the text of her speech and PowerPoint presentation for us. Our task is to evaluate her work using the form we chose before together as a group.

1. Introduction: ( 10 points)

·        What technique(s) was used in the introduction?

·        Unfortunately, I have not noticed any attention-getters in the introduction. Polina started her speech immediately with telling its topic. Probably she tried to refer to the audience by telling that we all are familiar with stage fright, but I am not sure.

·        Any link-element?

·        I think the link-element is the statement that stage fright is connected with communication.

·        Was the thesis statement given?

·        Maybe I missed it, but in my opinion, there was no a clear thesis statement in the introduction.

·        How effective was the introduction?

·        It was average. It was understandable what she was going to talk about.

2. Body:  (10 points)

·        How well structured was the information presented?

·        I must admit that the speech was well-structured, every part of it was devoted to a particular question.

·        What organizational structure was used in the body of the speech?

·        Outlining and organizational patterns were used.

·        How understandable was the information (was it clearly explained)?

·        Everything was clear, however there were some grammar mistakes that made me puzzled for a bit. But the information was understandable.

·        Quality of point-support (appropriateness, completeness, variety)

·        To my mind, the point-support that Polina provided was appropriate and suitable for the situation.

·        Use of facts, illustrations, examples, stories.

·        Honestly, I would like to hear more examples that would illustrate the speaker’s point.

·        The speech was coherent, I think all the parts come after each other logically. Besides, all the parts are connected with each other.

3. Conclusion: (10 points)

·        What technique(s) was used in the conclusion?

·        I suppose there were no special techniques in the conclusion. But maybe a piece of advice that Polina gave about dealing with stage fright was a technique.

·        Were all the steps followed (summary, action, emotional appeal?)

·        No. I am afraid that there was no a summary at all.

·        How effective was the conclusion?

The strength of the speech: the speech was absolutely clear and it was well-structured.

The weakness of the speech: there were no techniques used in the introduction and in the conclusion.

I am not sure how correctly I evaluated Polina’s speech as we do not have enough experience yet. However, I believe we will learn to do it soon. Generally speaking, I liked Polina’s work even though maybe I gave not so many scores. Her speech was very interesting and informative and I learned many things that I did not know. Moreover, we should keep in mind that is always hard to be the first, so Polina is the bravest of us and she did a great job.
