My prototype of an ideal public speaker
In every sphere
of activities there are people that we admire and everyone needs someone to
look up to. We imagine those individuals as masters of their craft, because
they possess all required skills, talents, features of character and so on. Thus,
in public speaking there is an ideal orator who can impress the audience by his
extraordinary speech and make them feel excited about it. Personally, when I
think of such orators I cannot help but remember genius people of Ancient Greek
and Rome with their white clothing. However, let us dive deeper and find out
what a perfect public speaker should be like.
First of
all, I reckon that one should be confident and have charisma to give a
successful talk in front of a public. A real professional evokes various
emotions- from sympathy to happiness. Eventually, nobody is left indifferent. It
means that one has not be embarrassed or afraid of people who listen to him. On
the contrary, it is advisable to interact with them with the help of asking
them some questions. Moreover, it is possible to learn more about the
background of some significant representatives of the audience to prove that you
have something in common with them. For example, if a speaker deals with
teenagers he should be familiar with their psychological characteristics and
with the latest trends or news that are interesting for young generation.
Secondly, a
perfect public speaker tells interesting stories and his speeches are never
boring. The speech must not be pointless it has to have a message. It can be
entertaining, it can be a serious talk, but anyway it should teach others something
important. Moreover, another peculiarity of an ideal orator is the logical structure
and composition of his speech. One should organize the information he wants to
share with in a logical manner according to the topic. Additionally, repetition
of important messages many times, emphasis of main ideas during a public speech
is vital for a better understanding of its essence by listeners.
Thirdly, providing
good examples is crucial. They have to be accurate and they should help a
speaker to describe different situations or notions to the audience in a clear way.
Using visual aid or such attention catchers as asking rhetorical questions,
telling small stories, making bold statements are necessary for keeping a
public interested.
Fourthly, I
guess it is needless to say that the quality of a speech itself should be on a
high level of a perfect public speaker. He uses rich vocabulary, clearly
articulates all the words he pronounces, changes his voice, makes pauses when
it is necessary. There must not be any grammatical mistakes or too many fillers
in a speech. Obviously, one should use methods of non-verbal communication to
look natural in front of the audience. An ideal orator always keeps his eye
contact with people who listen to him, uses gestures and different appropriate facial
expressions, controls his movements and body language in general. His posture is
strong and firm, however, he does not stand in the same place throughout the
whole speech. He can walk closer to the audience to draw more attention. As for
appearance, it should look neat.
Fifthly, I
suppose time management is one of the key factors to success in any field of
work including in public speaking. It is vital to be able to talk at the exact
given amount of time without making any long speeches. Otherwise, the audience
will get bored and they will think that a speaker does not respect them. It involves
a good preparation of a performance at home.
And last
but not least, a perfect public speaker is flexible and he can adapt to different
situations easily if something goes differently from what he planned.
Here is the picture that shows how I view an ideal orator:
He looks very open to people
and it seems that he does not have problems with his self-esteem. He attracts
others by his amiability and charisma.
That is it
